INTERESTING FACTS & TRIVIA

  • The twin island of Trinidad & Tobago is the birthplace of the Steel Pan.  The instrument evolved after the second World War, as a successor to the Bamboo percussion of the Tamboo Bamboo bands, which were then the centre-piece of the carnival street celebrations.

  • Our predecessors on campus, toured Europe in 1957, at the invitation of the French National Union of Students; and between 1958 and 1964 the then band toured on the boat "Ascania", performed in Miami, and appeared on  American television.

  • UWI Panoridim toured Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in 1991

  • Panoridim has conducted Summer School programmes to which the general public is invited.  In recent times, this occurred in the years 1995 and 1999.  The course, entitled "An Introduction to the Steel Pan", lasts for 6 weeks [2 classes per week].

  • Some of our members have moved on to become significant members of prestigious steel bands in Trinidad.
  • In 2000, the band participated in the first ever World Steel Band Festival held in Trinidad and Tobago.  Four of the members represented the band in the quartet section of the competition and placed third. It should also be noted that the participants who represented Exodus in the duet section were once core members of panoridim.
  • The Band has played for many great events and celebreties, including Queen Elizabeth II (of England, for the British Commonweath) on at least her last two visits to Jamaica; Hollywood actress/directror Sheryl Lee Ralph (for her wedding); Prime Minister P.J. Patterson (for the official presentation of the "Millenium Clock")
  • Many of our past members have gone on to become distinguished  & renowned citizens/ professionals in Caribbean societies, as well as in other parts of the world.  A few examples are:  Patrick Manning [former Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago]; Marjorie Whylie  [renowned Jamaican musician]; soca singer Colin Lucas [famous early 1990s hit song "Dollar Wine"].
