    Profile

    St. Martin is the smallest island in the world to be divided between two countries.
    The Northern French-administered St. Martin is a part of the French overseas department of Guadeloupe (however, St. Martin did vote to secede from Guadeloupe in 2003 and form a separate French territory, though this has not yet occurred). The Southern half of the island is Dutch-controlled, sharing a 10.2 km border.

    Area 53.2 km2
    Terrain Relatively flat, coral and limestone.
    Population 31,349 (French, 2002 est)
