The University of the
West Indies, Mona Campus, through the Alister McIntyre Research
and Policy Group recently completed a study entitled "A
Proposal for a National Tertiary Education System for Jamaica”.
The proposal was circulated to a Working Group which includes
members of the private sector and heads of tertiary institutions
and organizations, other stakeholders and the Minister of Education,
Youth and Culture, the Honourable Maxine Henry-Wilson. The decision
was made that the proposal should be given wide national exposure
and benefit from a variety of perspectives. It was decided that
UWI’s Mona Academic Conference 2004 would be the ideal
forum in which to engage the Jamaican community in a dialogue
about the future of higher education in Jamaica.
In light of this, the theme for this year’s conference
is Revisiting Tertiary and Higher Education Policy in Jamaica:
Towards Personal Gain or Public Goo?d. The choice of this
theme is not only significant but timely. With the ongoing
debate on education in general and the significant changes
taking place in tertiary and higher education in particular,
the theme goes to the heart of many of the challenges facing
the nation in an increasingly competitive global environment.
Issues arising from the conference will be widely circulated
and will be used to contribute to the final Policy Document,
tertiary education policy development and implementation in
the building of an efficient and effective tertiary / higher
education system in Jamaica.
