Who Are We?
The Research and Policy Group (RPG) of The University of the
West Indies (UWI), is a joint project of the Sir Arthur Lewis
Institute for Social and Economic Research (SALISES) and the
Mona School of Business (MSB).
What Do We Do?
The Mission of the Research and Policy Group is:
“To carry out research and analysis with a view to informing
policy choices in key priority areas relevant to the needs
of the government, the private sector, regional institutions
and, as appropriate, international institutions.”
Focus of the Group is:
- Governance Systems and Structures
- Electoral Systems
- Public Sector Modernisation
- Tertiary Education
- Media and Policy Formation
- Globalisation and Economic Liberalisation
- Labour and Employment Relations
In addition, the Group will carry out a systematic survey
to identify other priority areas of focus and the type of
research and analysis that will be needed by its stakeholders.
Some possible issues relate to the formulation of appropriate
paradigms; improved competitiveness of private sector enterprises;
new approaches to regional integration; external trade and
economic relations and South cooperation.
How Do We Operate?
The RPG’s focus of operations is Research that is Relevant
and Responsive.
It will serve as a dynamic instrument within the University
to produce ongoing research and analysis on selected topics,
at a standard that will increase the credibility enjoyed by
the University as an internationally recognised “centre
of excellence”.
Research and analysis will be carried out under the responsibility
of individual Fellows, known as the “Alister McIntyre
Fellows” in recognition of the important substantive
contribution made by former UWI Vice Chancellor, Sir Alister
McIntyre.
Associates
A group of associate fellows will complement and supplement
the work of the research fellows. These associates will be
drawn from persons who have proven track record and expertise
in specialised areas at the regional and international levels.
An integral and important component of the work of the RPG
is the organisation of seminars, conferences, symposia and
policy proposals using the research data. There are two outcomes
that will result from these activities, namely academic publications
and research policy guidelines.
In addition, the RPG works in collaboration with other Departments
and Units of the University so as to create the necessary
synergies and to maximise the use of the intellectual capital
of the institutions.
An Advisory Board chaired by the Principal of the Mona Campus,
Professor Kenneth Hall, governs RPG. The Boards provides oversight
of the Group’s work, and provides advice regarding trends
and emerging priorities that need to be addressed for research
and analysis.
Board members currently include:
- Professor Kenneth Hall, Principal, Mona Campus
- Professor Denis Benn
- Professor Barry Chevannes
- Professor Neville Duncan
- Professor Edwin Jones
- Professor Gordon Shirley
- Professor Alvin Wint
- Professor Neville Ying
