Mrs.
Foster-Allen joined the staff of Shortwood Teachers’
College as principal in September 2002, after some twenty-five
years in education, in Jamaica and in the United Kingdom.
She has a Master of Philosophy in Theology and a Bachelor’s
Degree in Education from the Universities of Birmingham and
Nottingham respectively.
As well as being the principal of this premier institution,
she is also a member of the National Task Force on Education,
the Broadcasting Commission, the chair of two school boards;
a Member of the Build Jamaica Foundation and also sits on
a number of advisory panels and committees.
Mrs. Foster-Allen has worked as an Education Officer with
the Ministry of Education Youth and Culture. She has also
been a principal of Priory High School, which she was asked
to set up when the school was given Grant-in-Aid status by
the Government of Jamaica. In addition, she worked for a short
period as an Education Consultant on issues around School
Improvement Planning and Environmental Education.
While in the United Kingdom she held a number of positions
including being the first black woman to be the principal
of a secondary school in Birmingham. She was also an Inspector
attached to her Majesty’s Inspectors. In the community
she served several organizations including Chair of BBC Midlands
Bi-medial Committee, Executive Member of Birmingham Women’s
Hospital Trust and Birmingham training and enterprise Council
and Birmingham Royal Ballet.
She has published several articles on education, gender and
race issues
