Dr. Simon Clarke is the former UNESCO Director and Education
Advisor for the Caribbean.
He was educated at Arco Iris, Panama, Calabar High School,
Jamaica, University of the West Indies, University of London,
Moray House College of Education, Edinburgh, Scotland.
Dr. Clarke’s involvement in education began with teaching
in high schools. He has had a number of firsts in his illustrious
career. He was the first principal of Green Island Secondary
School and the first principal of Sam Sharpe Teachers’
College. He was also the first Executive Director and later
Chairman of the Creative Production and Training Centre (CPTC),
a radio and television production house.
His civic and national duties presently include being a member
of the Board of Directors, International Centre for Environment
and Nuclear Sciences; University of the West Indies, Board
of Directors, Jamaica Movement for the Advancement of Literacy
(JAMAL); Jamaica’s representative on the Executive Board
of UNESCO, Paris and Vice President, International Bureau
of Education, Geneva , representing Latin America and the
Caribbean.
Other past activities in which Dr. Clarke, was involved are
Special Advisor to the Minister of Education, Youth and Culture,
Jamaica, Police Services Commission and serving on a number
of other Education and Community Development boards. He was
also a former broadcaster and Talk Show Host of (JBC’s
Public Eye) and patron of Child Month for five years.
Dr. Clarke is the recipient of numerous awards including
the Order of Distinction from the Government of Jamaica (1975),
UNIA Marcus Garvey Centenary award for Outstanding Service
to Africans at Home and Abroad (1987), Inter American University
of Puerto Rico Outstanding Service Award (1992) and the Jamaica
Teachers’ Association Roll of Honour Award in 1997.
He has served as Justice of the Peace in the parish of Hanover
and currently in St. James, and is a Deacon at the Calvary
Baptist Church in Montego Bay.
