Dr.
Dennis Irvine is presently Chairman of the University Council
of Jamaica, and has worked extensively both locally, regionally
and internationally in the field of education and also in
the field of science and technology.
He was formerly Professor of Chemistry, University of Ibadan,
Nigeria (1963- 1969); the Vice Chairman and Principal of the
University of Guyana (1969-1982); Chairman, Caribbean Examinations
Council (1974-1979); Member, United Nations Advisory Committee
on Science and Technology for Development (1981-1993) UNESCO’s
Science Advisor to the Caribbean (1983-1988); Director, Commonwealth
of Learning (1989-1994) Co-ordinator COL Caribbean Programmes
(1994-1996); Special Advisor to the President of COL (1996-2000).
He has been a member of the Caribbean Examinations Council
since 1980 and is also a Visiting Fellow at All Souls College
in Oxford since 1979.
Dr. Irvine is the author of some 50 papers on Chemistry in
learned journals, and of numerous articles on education, higher
education, distance education and on science and technology
for development.
