The
Hon. Aloun N’dombet-Assamba was appointed Minister of
Industry and Tourism for Jamaica in October 2002. The position
also carries the responsibility for entertainment. Since the
Minister’s appointment, the sector has seen a significant
upswing in visitor arrivals.
An attorney and former head of the City of Kingston Cooperative
Credit Union, Minister N’dombet-Assamba served as Minister
of State in the previous Ministry of Industry, Commerce and
Technology.
Prior to embarking on a career in political life, she was
founding commissioner and acting chairman of the Fair Trading
Commission; deputy chairman of the Jamaica Cultural Development
Commission; a member of the Jamaica Bar Association; and a
board member and treasurer of the Canadian University Service
Overseas, representing the Caribbean region. In addition,
she has worked as an active member, mediator and trainer for
the Dispute Resolution Foundation of Jamaica.
Minister N’dombet-Assamba has been honored by several
major organizations and institutions. In 1991, she became
the first Caribbean national to be awarded the prestigious
Heinz Fellowship by the Heinz Foundation; and in 1999, the
American Biographical Institute named her “Woman of
the Year” and appointed her to its Professorial Advisory
Board. Minister N’dombet-Assamba is a graduate of the
University of the West Indies, the Norman Manley Law School,
and the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs
at the University of Pittsburgh. |
