Professor Barry Chevannes is Professor of Social Anthropology
at UWI, Mona. He has published extensively on issues of gender,
religious ideology and Rastafari culture. Among his publications
are “ Rastafari: roots and Ideology” (1995) and
“Learning to be a man: Culture, Socialization and Male
Identity in five Caribbean Communities” (2001). He is
involved in Fathers inc. in Jamaica and is the recipient of
the UWI Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence.
Professor Chevannes served as Dean of the Faculty of Social
Sciences from 1996 to 2004.
