On the first evening
of IDIERI 5, the opening session will incorporate an official
welcome to the delegates, as well as an outline of the proceedings
for the duration of the Research Institute. This will be followed
by a welcome reception and dinner. Daily activities will include
Keynote addresses by distinguished researchers who will help
to focus the main issues and activities of the Institute.
Participants will
also attend a number of 'cultural immersion sessions' designed
to throw into sharp relief some of the main issues that are
to be addressed in the research stations. The activities of
these research stations will be reported back in plenary session
towards the end of the Institute, and the use of Drama in
this reporting will be strongly encouraged!
The remaining
time will be devoted to the presentation and discussion of
delegates' papers, a selection of which will be published
in a special issue of the Caribbean Quarterly, a refereed
journal published by the Cultural Studies Initiative of the
University of the West Indies.
A day has been
set aside on Sunday July 16, 2006, for excursions, to give
IDIERI delegates an opportunity to see something of Jamaica.
These excursions and guided tours can be selected and paid
for at registration. An attempt will be made to provide something
to suit all tastes and budgets, including visits to local
beaches, Blue Mountain and environmental tours, visits to
historic sites etc.
IDIERI 5 will
close with a theatre performance and dinner at the Mona Campus
of the University of the West Indies, including an opportunity
for delegates to 'drop foot' to a local Reggae band.
An outline of
the main activities will be sent to delegates in advance of
the Institute, while a detailed programme, including abstracts,
will be available at registration.
