Sir Fitzroy Richard Augier KT, (1996). Sir Roy, Professor Emeritus, Department of History , The University of theWest Indies, Mona Campus was educated at St. Mary’s College, Castries, the University of St. Andrews, MA (1949) and PhD (1954);
the University of London, Institute of Education, Diploma in Education (1950); and the University of London, Institute of Historical Research and Institute of Commonwealth Studies (1951- 54 )
Professor Augier began his career at the University College of the West Indies in 1954 as a Junior Research Fellow in the Institute of Social and Economic Studies. He was appointed Lecturer in the Department of History in 1955, Senior Lecturer in 1965 and Professor of West Indian History in 1989. He was Dean of the Faculty of Arts and General Studies from 1967 -1972 and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (1972 -88). While Pro-Vice Chancellor he continued to teach and supervise students. His publications include “The Making of theWest Indies, (with Gordon, Hall and Reckord); Sources of West Indian History, (with Gordon); Report on Rastafarians; Debates in Parliament on the Abolition of Slavery and articles in Caribbean Quarterly, New World Quarterly and Journal of Caribbean History.
Sir Roy’s service to the Caribbean region includes being Member, Anguilla Commission of Inquiry (1970); Member, University of Guyana Review Commission (1992); Chairman, Caribbean Examinations Council (1986-96); President of the Association of Caribbean Historians (1981-1984); and Chairman of the Drafting Committee UNESCO General History of the Caribbean (1981 – present)
His service has been recognized by the International Council on Archives (1980); by France, Chevalier, Ordre des Arts et Lettres (1989); by the Institute of Jamaica, The Musgrave Gold Medal (1996) and by election as a Fellow of the Institute. |
