Erna Brodber was born in Jamaica and educated there from elementary school to university. She holds postgraduate degrees in Sociology and History; was employed at The University of the West Indies but, since 1985, has been making her living as a visiting professor.
Her books in fiction are Jane and Louisa Will Soon Come Home (1980), Myal (1988), Louisana (1994) and The Rainmaker's Mistake (2007). She has published several articles and ten books (two are collaborations) in History and Sociiology, the most recent being Standing Tall …(2003), The continent of Black Consciousness (2003), The Second Generation of Freemen in Jamaica …2004 and Woodside Peartree Grove P.O. (2004). Brodber, a Commonwealth Prize Winner [ Canada and the Caribbean ] (1980), and a Musgrave gold medalist (1999) was in 2004 awarded the Order of Distinction (Commander Class) for literature, history and community development. She was honoured by her country in 1999 by the award of a gold Musgrave medal and in 2006 she became the first Jamaican recipient of the International Prince Claus Award. 2007 – guest lecturer in creative writing in the Department of Literatures in English. |
