Elsa Leo-Rhynie, Professor of Gender and Development Studies, was appointed Principal of the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) in February 2006. She previously held the post of Pro Vice Chancellor and Chair of the Board for Undergraduate Studies at UWI from August of 2002. Prior to this she served for six years as Deputy Principal of the Mona Campus and for four years as Regional Coordinator of the Centre for Gender and Development Studies at the UWI. A UWI graduate, her career has included a Senior Lectureship in educational psychology in the Faculty of Education of the UWI, a five-year appointment as Executive Director of the Institute of Management and Production in Jamaica , and thirteen years of high school science teaching in Jamaica and England . Professor Leo-Rhynie has carried out research and published extensively in the areas of education, training and gender concerns, has directed projects for government and international agencies, and has also successfully undertaken consultancy assignments across the Caribbean region. She has served on a number of Boards and Foundations involved in education, and chairs the Dudley Grant Memorial Trust which advocates on behalf of early childhood education in Jamaica . She has been a member of the Jamaica Privy Council since 1996, and in 2000, she was awarded the Order of Distinction (Commander Class) for her services to education. |
