The Department offers a number
of prizes and awards for outstanding students at the undergraduate
and graduate levels, as described below.

Dorothy Collings
Awards
Dr. Dorothy Collings, the first Professor and Head
of Department, when it started in 1971; presented the Department
with awards for both the undergraduate and postgraduate student
who demonstrated scholastic excellence and the potential for leadership.
In 1974 Mrs. Laximi Mansingh, - now retired Medical Librarian at
UWI, was the first to receive the postgraduate award and Ms. Joan
Benn-Ferreira, the undergraduate award. Other awardees were:

Daphne Douglas Prize
Graduates of the Department and other information
professionals created a prize in honour of Professor Emeritus Daphne
Douglas, the first Jamaican female professor and Department Head,
1976 -1980, 1982 – 1993. This prize was first presented in
1995, to the graduating B.A. student who demonstrated the greatest
personnel and professional development, during their programme of
study. Ms. Veta Porter-Brown was the first recipient, in 1995. Other
recipients were:

Gloria Baker Memorial
Bursary Award
Ms. Gloria Baker was a distinguished Senior Librarian
at the Clarendon Parish Library, where she served the Jamaica Library
Service in various capacities for 30 years. In honour of her outstanding
contribution to the development of public libraries, community development
in the Parish and to the formation of ALJALS, the Association of
Librarians in the Jamaica Library Service. In 1998, ALJALS offered
this bursary ($25,000.00) is presented to a qualifying second or
final year Jamaican student. Ms. Juliet Lawson – 2000.
School Librarianship
Prize
Offered in conjunction with the Department of Education,
the first prize was awarded to Ms. Juliet Edwards, in 2000 and to
Ms. Pauline Nicholas in 2001.
COMLA (Commonwealth
Library Association) Prize
Launched in the 2000/2001 academic year, is given
to the best Level II student. Ms. Kadyll McNaught, was the first
recipient of this prize.

Amy Robertson Prize
Launched in the 2002/2003 academic year this prize
is awarded to the graduating student in the School Librarianship
programme, who has achieved the best grade.
Alumni Scholarship
Launched in the 2002/2003 academic year this prize
is awarded to the first year undergraduate student who has achieved
the best grade. Nicholas Graham is the first recipient of this prize.
MA/MLS Fellowship
Full time MA/MLS students who are undertaking the
research paper option can apply for a fellowship, which will be
offered for the first time in Semester 1 of the 2003/2004 academic
year.
