The
Dorothy Collings Electronic Resource Centre - Computer Lab
The Department of Library and Information Studies
has a state-of- the-art computer laboratory intended to provide
students with the tools they need to fully exploit the potential
of modern information technology. Named after the department's first
head, Professor Dorothy Collings, the laboratory was expanded in
2000 and now boasts 25 student workstations, 1 teaching workstation,
1 web server, 1 database server and 1 CD-ROM/DVD server and 3 printers.
In addition there is a wide range of peripheral hardware including
digital projectors, flatbed scanners, digital cameras and camcorder.
Students have access to a wide range of software, including:

COMPUTER LABORATORY RULES
AND REGULATIONS
All students are required to adhere to the following
Regulations governing the use of the DLIS Computer Laboratory. Failure
to observe any of them will result in disciplinary action being
taken against offending students, which may include the withdrawal
of lab use privileges.
Rules and Regulations
1. Access
The Computer Laboratory is accessible only to Library and Information
majors and other students currently registered for DLIS technology
and related courses.
2. Fees
DLIS undergraduates and postgraduates are required to pay their
technology fee.
Non DLIS students registered in the following
courses are required to pay a technology fee.

The fee covers the use of computers and equipment
and the supply of paper and ink for DLIS course related assignments
only.
Fee Structure
J$ 600.00 per semester or
J$ 1000.00 for two semesters if paid before October 31.
Fees should be paid at the DLIS office within two
weeks of registration. A receipt, bearing the student’s ID
number, will be issued.
Receipts must be retained to facilitate spot checks,
in the lab. Students without their receipts may be asked to leave
the lab.
3. Lab Use
Students are expected to be considerate of other users of the
Lab. Please regulate the volume of your speech as well as the
volume of the speakers on the computers.
Students are required to:
Make advance bookings of the computer they wish to use. Booking
sheets are put out on Friday mornings
Sign the Lab Register upon entering and leaving
the Computer Lab.
Use your own diskettes for work they do in the
lab. You are not allowed to save anything on the hard drive, unless
you are instructed to do so by the Course Lecturer. Hard drives
are checked and all extraneous material is deleted.
Ensure that all diskettes are virus-free before
use in the Lab. The DLIS machines will issue a virus alert if
diskettes are infected.
Report any hardware or software problems encountered to your lecturer
or the lab assistant
Please do not:
Introduce any software or hardware, to the Computer Laboratory
Modify any of the software programmes or settings on the computers.
4. Internet
Internet access is provided for instructional purpose. You should
make extensive use of this facility but, not abuse it. Unless
permission is granted by the Course Lecturer you are not allowed
to print pages from the World Wide Web.
5. CD-ROM’s
The Department has a growing CD-ROM collection which are to be
used in the Computer Lab. The Librarian will locate the CD’s
for you.
6. Printing
Print facilities in the lab should only be used for printing DLIS
assignments and course work only. This facility is for your benefit,
and should not be abused.
7. Finally
The Computer Lab is not an extension of the library and should
not be used as a reading / study room. Neither is the Lab intended
for private work.
DLIS reserves the right to monitor all work being
done in the lab to ensure that no activity, which in the staff’s
opinion is, improper or inimical to the teaching objectives of
the Department is being carried out.
Absolutely no eating, drinking or chewing is allowed
in the Computer Lab. Students are not allowed to take any kind
of food or drink anywhere in the computer lab.
The Computer Lab can only be used by students
registered for DLIS courses and for the production of DLIS Course
related material. Spot checks will be done from time to time to
ensure that this rule is observed.
