Course Content
NOTE: A weblog and an electronic discussion group
will be used to facilitate exchange of information among teaching
staff and class members.
1. Introduction to the content and scope of the course.
Students’ presentations on their experience in the use
of Information and Communication Technologies.
Introduction to electronic discussion groups, weblogs and
evaluation of some publicly available facilities. Electronic
discussion groups and technologies and their impact on library
operations. Social networking tools.

2. Introduction to the Internet – networks, networking
and connectivity – function and operation of data
communications hardware and software and various
network topologies.
The Internet and libraries; Using search engines

3. Software – Operating systems – purpose and objective
e.g. Windows and Linux. User interfaces.
Lab: Organizing files and folders and using Windows
Explorer and My Computer.
4. Software – Application programs; Word processing for increasing
productivity. Open Source Initiatives
Lab: Microsoft Word. – creating Tables of
Contents and
Indexes; document formatting; document orientation
5. In-course test one (1) hour and using the Internet to
access information.
6. Digital and Electronic Libraries. Caribbean Libraries;
NLJ; NALIS; Greenstone & DSpace
Computer Hardware – Function and relationships
between the internal components of a personal
computer. Storing and retrieving information – types
of magnetic disk devices, organization, principles of
operation etc.
Lab: Information input and output devices –
operation and applications; scanning demonstration
7. Internet Browsers, search engines, portals.
Creating a basic website for a library or

8. Introduction to Database Management Systems.
Microsoft Access; Accessing online databases and resources

9. Creating presentations. Microsoft PowerPoint Images
and scanning, incorporating audio and video into
presentations.

10. Using spreadsheets, creating budgets etc. Microsoft

11. Information Security and troubleshooting anti-virus
software.
