FIRST INCOURSE TEST: PHONETICS

TIME: 5.00 – 6.00 p.m.
GUIDELINES FOR REVISION FOR TEST
PHONETICS
• Be able to identify differences between spelling forms
and pronunciation of speech sounds
• Be able to identify the articulatory organs used in
the production of speech sounds
• Be able to identify and describe consonants using
the three main articulatory parameters, state of the glottis,
place & manner of articulation (Pay special attention
to the order of parametric description of consonants)
• Be able to identify and provide the IPA symbols representing
articulatory diagrams of speech sounds
• Be able to identify and describe vowels using three
main articulatory parameters, height of tongue, part of tongue
and shape of lips, in that order (IPA symbols will be used)
• Be able to identify and provide the IPA symbols for
vowels on the vowel diagram
• Be able describe the similarities and differences
between consonants and vowels
SECOND INCOURSE TEST: PHONETICS
DATE: FEBRUARY 25, 2005
VENUES: GROUPS A & B (NELT)
TIME: 5.00 – 6.00 p.m.
GUIDELINES
This test will include relevant components of previous topics
and additional tasks covering topics completed after the first
test on phonetics.
INDEPENDENT LAB WORK
1. Independent lab tab times have been set up in the Linguistics
Lab located in the Writing Centre.
2. Students who wish to take advantage of the independent
lab hour will have to use the CD-Rom: introduction to phonetics
& Phonology in the Linguistics Lab section of the Lab.
The CD is provided in the Lab.
3. Students are allowed one independent lab hour per week
due to the limited number of computers available in the Lab.
The Lab can accommodate ten (10) students at a time.
4. To use the Lab, students are required to pay $100.00.
5. Pay the money into the following Account at NCB (UWI, Mona
Branch):

6. Take the receipt to the Writing Centre to be registered.
• Note the fee charged is for the use of the facilities
in the linguistics section of the Writing Centre only.
