MA in English Language
The Programme
Target
Persons interested in English Language usage in Public Media, Editors, English Language Trainers and Teachers at the Post-secondary level (especially for courses such as CAPE Communication Studies, UWI courses such as UC010, UC120/FD10A/FD14A, and equivalent courses at Teachers' Colleges, and other universities and tertiary institutions).
Objectives
The programme is designed to give students a sound technical knowledge of the structure and usage of English. You will also gain a grasp of the social issues surrounding its use both within the Caribbean and around the world, and the competence to design and teach English language courses at the post-secondary level.
Qualifications for Entry
A University degree (a minimum of Lower Second Class Honours) or any qualification adjudged by the university to be equivalent.
Duration
16 months. The programme will be offered only on a part-time basis through face-to-face delivery, online delivery and distance/reading.
Programme Requirements
UWI Foundation Linguistics courses:
- L10A – Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology
- L10B – Introduction to Morphology and Syntax
- L23A – Sociology of Language
- L23B – Sociolinguistics
OR
Be able to establish that you have a grasp of the fundamentals of Linguistics:
Plus 8 Graduate level courses, each worth 3 credits. To graduate with an M.A. in the English Language, a student needs 24 credits.
