Title image: MSc in Computer-based Management Systems

This degree offers a mixture of courses from the Departments of Computer Science and Management Studies (Faculty of Social Sciences). It trains people to take up middle-management positions in the Information Technology sector and/or to take on positions as management consultants and business analysts.

Objectives
This programme will provide the participants with:

  • A comprehensive understanding of how information systems are changing organizaional structures and how they can be used effectively to create a basis of competitive advantage;
  • A comprehensive introduction to the principles of management
  • A comprehensive introduction to methods used in managing the development of computer-based systems:
  • Detailed exposure to new advances in information technology.
Entry Requirements
Fifty students are admitted to the programme annually. Three categories of students are considered - students with:

  • BSc in Management Studies
  • BSc in Computer Science
  • Bachelors in any other field
A good second class degree, typically in a business related area or in Computer Science. Candidates are also normally required to have at least 2 years work experience in a relevant field. Only students with a strong upper second class honours degree or better are allowed to enter the programme directly from the undergraduate programme.
Applicants must provide evidence that they will be able to meeet the strenuous requirements of the programme:

  • unusually intensive study
  • excellence in either Computer Science or Management Information Systems
  • a strong aptitude for the other discipline and
  • the ability to effectively synthesize large amounts of information
Admission Procedures
Students should apply for admission through the post-graduate section.

Applications meeting the initial selection criteria will be contacted in April of each year and some candidates may be invited for an interview on campus. Final decisions will be made by the beginning of May, each year.

Length of the Programme
Normally the programme takes a period of 20 months on a part-time basis. However, for students without any academic preparation in Management Studies or Computer Science it will take 32 months.

Programme Structure
The programme is structured in four sections. Three different groups of students are easily accommodated by the way in which section two of the programme is organized.

  Section I
   Consists of two foundation courses:

  • Information Systems in Organisations
  • Systems Design and Engineering
  Section II
Students who enter the programme with a Computer Science background but relatively less exposure to Management Studies courses will be required to do the following eight courses:

  • Finance
  • Accounting
  • Marketing
  • Production and Operations Management
  • Organizational Theory and Behaviour
  • Industry and Competitive Analysis
  • Internation Business
  • Decision Models for Managers
Students who enter with a background in Management Studies, but with relatively little exposure to Computer Science will be required to do the following eight Section II courses:

  • Database Management Systems
  • Data Communications Systems
  • Principles of Computer Systems
  • Introduction to Program Design
  • Operating Systems
  • Programming Languages
Students without any academic preparation in Management Studies or Computer Science will be required to do all sixteen courses in Section II of the programme. This would require an additional year of course work.

  Section III
There will be three full courses and two half courses to be taken by all students. The full courses are:

  • User Interface Management Systems
  • Expert Systems
  • Computer Aided Design and Simulation
  The two half courses are:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Human Factors in Computing
  Section IV
Two courses will be taught in this section. The first is an integrative course, Information Systems Policy, and the second is in the form of a Project.

Programme Schedule
The programme is offered on a part-time basis, with students coming to classes for th eequivalent of two full days per week. The days on which class sessions are to be offered are:

    Mondays and Wednesdays 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. and Saturdays 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Computer Lab facilities will be available on Mondays to Thursdays 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. and Saturdays 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
