ECON3051 : Economic Development: Perspective and Theories

Course Description

This course introduces the field of economic development.  It examines a number of definitions and measures of development and highlights the structural diversity and common characteristics of less developed countries (LDCs).  The theories of development are reviewed, and numerous multi-disciplinary perspectives on development are highlighted.


Course Assessment

Five Reflection Slips on Material Covered in Class  (5%)

One-Page Written Submission on Application of Development Theories to Current Events  (5%)

Submission of draft essay and annotated bibliography

N.B. The essay presented in class will only be eligible for a maximum of 40 marks (out of 100) if draft essay and annotated bibliography are not submitted by the predetermined deadline

Essay presented in class  (40%)

Final Examination  (50%)


Prescribed Texts

There is no single text for the course, however, Todaro, Michael, Economic Development, Reading : Addison-Wesley Longman (latest edition), will be used extensively.  This will be supplemented by the readings highlighted for each course unit.
