How to Apply

Bachelor of Basic Medical Sciences (BBMEDSCI )

  • The degree of Bachelor of Basic Medical Sciences (BBMedSci.) is awarded on the basis of a programme of studies comprising courses in medical science disciplines listed in the Appendix, together with Foundation courses.
  • The degree programme offers majors in Anatomy, Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Physiology. A student must declare a major at the time of entry into the degree programme. A major may be changed up to the beginning of the second year of the programme; no change will be allowed thereafter.
  • The following types of courses, which may consist of both theoretical and practical parts, are offered:

• Courses taught by the Faculty of Medical Sciences;

• Foundation Courses. All core subjects are compulsory.

• A course in the programme extends over one semester, but in some cases, may extend over two (2) semesters. The weighting of a course is expressed in terms of credits.

  • In order to be eligible for the award of the degree, candidates must have obtained passes in courses equivalent to a minimum of ninety (90) credits in one of the major disciplines and nine (9) credits in the Foundation Courses.

BSc Physical Therapy

  • The degree of B.Sc. Physical Therapy is awarded on the basis of a programme of studies comprising professional, medical and rehabilitation science courses listed in the Appendix, together with certain Foundation Courses.
  • The following types of courses, which may consist of both theoretical and practical parts, are offered:
      • Courses taught by the Faculty of Medical Sciences;
      • Approved out-of-faculty courses offered by other faculties;
      • Foundation Courses which are given throughout the University to augment the general education of students
  • Each course normally extends over not more than one (1) semester, but in some cases may extend over two (2) semesters. The weighting of a course is expressed in terms of credits.
  • In order to be eligible for the award of the degree, candidates must:
  • have been in satisfactory attendance equivalent to at least six (6) semesters of full- time study; and
  • have obtained passes in courses equivalent to a minimum of one hundred and ten (110) credits from Levels I, II and III courses, and Foundation Courses, as follows

  • All courses are compulsory.
  • On successful completion of Levels I, II and III, all candidates is required to sit a Professional Qualification Examination. This examination consists of two (2) parts: theory and practical. Both components of this examination are graded by an external examiner.

BSc Nursing (Post RN)

Objectives
The degree programme aims to upgrade the skills of nurses who already hold or are potential holders of leadership positions in the health services of the region; as well as to equip them with specific competencies which form the basis for continuing growth and specialization. With this preparation, graduates of the programme are expected to perform leading roles as:

  • professional nurses with increased depth in knowledge and understanding of clinical nursing
  • interventions and their desired outcomes;
    administrators and managers at appropriate levels in the nursing and health care system -primary, secondary and tertiary Institutions and agencies- and in Ministries of Health in their countries;
  • becoming educators at various strata of educational programmes for the preparation of nursing and other health personnel; arid
  • becoming researchers, with particular reference to nursing and health care situations or problem.
