The
Department of Basic Medical Sciences, headed
by Dr. Oswald Simon, consists of sections of Anatomy, Biochemistry,
Physiology and Pharmacology. This department provides the foundation
required for students reading for the MB,BS and dentistry (which
is offered at the St. Augustine Campus in Trinidad & Tobago).
It also prepares students for nursing and physical therapy degrees.
On its own it offers the Bachelor of Basic Medical Sciences offering
majors in Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology and Pharmacology.
In conjunction with the Faculty of Pure & Applied Sciences,
it offers majors in Biochemistry and Molecular biology. Graduate
programmes at the MSc, MPhil and PhD levels are offered in a variety
of areas. Research includes nutrition, diabetes, cancer, and immunology,
among others.
The UWI School of Nursing, headed by Dr. H.
Hewitt, offers undergraduate and graduate programmes in nursing.
The Department is involved in research in the areas of home-based
care for HIV/AIDS patients, traditional medicine using indigenous
plants and cultural practices in maternal and child health, among
others.
