The Undergraduate Curriculum
is five years in duration and consists of a three-year
Stage 1 programme and two further years in Stage
2. It includes
both structured and unstructured time.
Most of the structured
time is spent completing the courses covering the core
content (that which all students must learn)
while the remainder is used to complete special study
modules and electives.
In Stage 1, a modular, system-based
approach is used, with courses designed to encourage
integration between
the basic
medical science subjects and the clinical (patient-centered)
disciplines. "Health" rather than "disease" is
emphasized although students begin to encounter patients
as early as the first year. On successful completion
of Stage 1, students are eligible for the award of
a Bachelors
Degree
in Basic Medical Science (B.Med.Sci.) and to continue
into the final two years of the MB,BS programme.
In
Stage 2, the final two years of the programme is
primarily hospital based and consists of a series of
rotating clerkships
in the main clinical disciplines with emphasis on
general training rather than on specialist hospital practice.
On successful completion of the programme, graduates
are required
to complete an 18 month pre-registration internship
before being fully to undertake independent practice.
