The
Department of Pathology, headed by Professor
D. Shah, provides laboratory and clinical training for undergraduate
and graduate students, as well as maintains modern laboratories
in hematology, chemical, surgical pathology, as well as cytology
offering service to the hospital and the region. The Department
is heavily involved in the HTLV-1 research project in collaboration
with the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes
of Health in the U.S.A. Other research projects include epidemiology,
natural history and descriptive pathology of various cancers.
The Department of
Microbiology, headed by Professor M. Smikle, provides
diagnostic and clinical training for undergraduate and graduate
students, as well as provide diagnostic service to the hospital.
Research in this department covers the areas of blood stream infections,
antibiotic resistance of various infectious diseases as well as
immunological and molecular studies of the human immunodeficiency
virus.
