HTLV-1 Associated Myelopathy/Tropical Spastic Paraparesis: How Far have We Come?

The chain of events leading to HTLV-1 associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) would appear to be as follows: inefficient CTL response to HTLV-1, high proviral load and high level of tax expression, high frequency of tax activated CD4+ T cells, frequent migration of CD4+ T cells to the central nervous system, release of IFN-γ, TNF and metalloproteinases by antigen-stimulated T cells, and tissue damage.

The Effects of Mild Hypothermia on Coagulation and Haemodynamic Variables in Anaesthetized Rabbits

This study investigated the effect of mild hypothermia on prothrombin and partial thromboplastin time, platelet count, fibrinogen, blood pressure and heart rate in rabbits. The coagulation mechanism was not clinically affected by mild hypothermia, while haemodynamic responses were significantly suppressed.

In Kingston and St Andrew, papillary thyroid cancer has surpassed follicular cancer to become the commonest thyroid cancer subtype, and the rank of medullary carcinoma has increased from fifth to third, in keeping with the histological profile exhibited worldwide.

A Ten-year Assessment of Anabolic Steroid Misuse among Competitive Athletes in Puerto Rico

This is the first comprehensive study on steroid misuse among competitive athletes in the Caribbean. This study demonstrates the need for a useful framework to establish prevention of steroid misuse and educational programmes on such misuse in the Caribbean region.
Life after Lower Extremity Amputation in Diabetics

Achieving functional independence is the rehabilitation goal for amputees as this leads to a better quality of life (QOL). This study examined the relationship between QOL and functional independence of lower limb diabetic amputees one to three years post amputation. It also explored the relationship between QOL and functional independence with demographic characteristics.

Motorcycle trauma in a St Lucian hospital revealed that more than fifty per cent of crashes occurred during the weekends and more than fifty per cent of the motorcyclists were not wearing crash helmets.

Previous mosquito surveys never identified any Anopheles spp mosquitoes in St Kitts. Here we describe the first record of Anopheles albimanus in St Kitts.
Contraception and Induced Abortion in the West Indies: A Review

This literature review about contraception and induced abortion in the West Indies shows quite a modest track of scientific records, poor knowledge of contraception, high estimated number of induced abortion and missing research on prevalence of abortion. Most islands have restrictive laws on abortion.
Acute Computed Tomography Findings in Patients with Acute Confusion of Non-traumatic Aetiology

A retrospective review was undertaken of all patients referred for computed tomography brain scan for acute onset of confusion not consequent on head trauma. Most patients were 50 years or older; 20.4% had acute abnormalities, the most common being an ischaemic infarct.
