The English- and Dutch-speaking Caribbean experienced three phases of the influenza pandemic, with most cases occurring in 2009. The majority of cases had symptoms of the respiratory tract, a quarter required hospitalization and the case fatality rate was 1.8%.
Using the modern WGA-HRP neurohistochemical tracing technique, the brainstem localization of vagal preganglionic parasympathetic neurons was investigated in the Agouti.
Following injections of the tracer into the muscular wall of various sections of the stomach, retrogradely labelled neurons were seen in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve as well as in the nucleus ambiguus. The labelled neurons were bilaterally distributed.

This cross-sectional study assessed the prevalence and characteristics of myasthenia gravis (MG) in South Trinidad. Estimated MG point prevalence in South Trinidad on March 31, 2010 was 78 per million. A statistically significant higher prevalence was detected in Africans than East-Indians.

Mean platelet volume (MPV), a surrogate marker of platelet function, was found to be associated with inflammatory diseases. Results showed that MPV was significantly lower in patients with nasal polyps compared to control subjects.
Mean platelet volume (MPV) is increased in diabetic patients. It is associated with the degree of glycaemic control. Moreover, MPV is higher in patients with diabetic retinopathy.

An eight-week mat Pilates exercise programme may contradict or even reverse some of the most serious consequences of ageing associated with an increased fat mass and reduced lean body mass in elderly females.
Data from a series of athletes presenting with leg pain were analysed. The diagnoses included exertional anterior compartment syndrome of the leg, medial tibial stress syndrome and stress fracture of the tibia. The diagnosis and surgical management of exertional anterior compartment syndrome are discussed in detail.

To ascertain the prevalence of symptoms of depression and anxiety and their correlates, surveys containing sociodemographics and items from both the Beck Anxiety Inventory and the Beck Depression Inventory-II were administered to outpatient clinic attendees in Western Jamaica.
A protocol is designed to develop an EQ-5D-3L value set using a small sample and a simple respondent valuation exercise. Such a value set can be used to infer the relative values that a society would place on different interventions.
