FACULTY AWARDS CEREMONY

The annual Faculty Awards ceremony for undergraduate students was held on March 25, 2004, in the New Chemistry Lecture Theatre.

The Dean of the Faculty, Professor Ronald Young, chaired the function, which recognized outstanding undergraduate students in the Faculty for their academic achievements in the 2002/2003 academic year.

The lecture theatre was ‘standing room only’ as the awardees and their proud parents, other students, academic staff and other well-wishers gathered to show their support.

Mr David Williams, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Literatures in English, read several of his poems.

The keynote speaker was Dr Jonathan Farley, of the Department of Mathematics, MIT, was the keynote speaker. In a short but stimulating address, he noted ways in which the West Indies can help the United States – a concept that runs counter to the way most people view the relationship between our region and the USA.

The presentation of awards and certificates was made by Miss Stephney Ferguson, University Librarian.

The achievements of 27 young persons who had graduated with First Class Honours were recognized.

Nine students received letters of commendation for having been named to the Dean’s List for their performance in Part I of the BSc degree programme, and six for their performance in Part II.

Presentations were also made to a number of students who had won scholarships or bursaries, as well as departmental prizes.

The Deputy Dean, Dr Ralph Robinson, introduced the keynote speaker, and Dr Donna Minott gave the vote of thanks. Musical entertainment was provided by the group Q-T.
