AWARD OF HIGHER DEGREESDepartment of Life SciencesKarl Aiken has received the PhD degree in Zoology for his dissertation entitled "Age Asymmetry, Growth and Mortality of the Lane Snapper, Lutjanus synagris (Linnaeus, 1758), in Jamaican Waters Using Otliths and Other Analyses." He was supervised by Dr Brian Freeman. Audette Bailey has successfully completed her PhD degree in Zoology. Her research was on "The Biology and Ecology of the Endangered Giant Swallowtail Butterfly Papilio (Pterourus) homerus (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) in Jamaica." Her supervisor was Dr Eric Garraway. Nadia-Deen Ferguson has been awarded the MPhil degree in Zoology for her work on "Water Quality and Plankton Associated with a Mariculture Shrimp Farm." She was supervised by Dr Dale Webber and Dr Mona Webber. Christine Kirkwood has received the MPhil degree in Zoology. Her thesis was entitled "Oxidative Status, Myosatellite Proliferation and Growth Factor Expression in Different Muscle Fibre Types." Her supervisor was Dr Mark Thomas. Damian Nesbeth has been awarded the MPhil degree in Zoology for her research on "Effect of the Bauxite/Alumina Waste on the Diversity and Abundance of the Benthic Macroinvertebrates of the Upper Rio Cobre." The research was supervised by Dr Eric Hyslop. Philip Rose has been awarded the MPhil degree in Botany for his research on "A Modified Rapid Ecological Assessment (REA) of North Eastern St Elizabeth Vegetation." He was supervised by Dr Dale Webber. Kaydene Williams has been awarded the MPhil degree in Botany. Her thesis was entitled "The Response of Root-Inhabiting Fungi, Soil-Inhabiting Nematodes and Plant Vigour to Plastic Mulching of Papaya Rhizosphere Soil in Jamaica. Her supervisor was Dr Phyllis Coates-Beckford.
