The Geological Society of Trinidad and Tobago, Students Arms- Mona Chapter hosted its first Annual Brunch on Saturday the 30th September 2006 in Lab 4 of the Geography/Geology Department at 10am. The brunch was intended to welcome the new members (mainly the first year students) to the society.
The turn out of the first years was not as well as we expected but the executive and other members as well as few members of the staff attended this exciting event including Mr. Brown (the Museum Curator), Post graduates Seema and Taneisha.
After the formalities of the national anthems of Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica being sung, the opening prayer and Candice De Gale and the 1 st VP (Sunil) gave their short speeches of the society's intentions and achievements, the feast began.
The food was nothing short of excellent!!! A combination of Trinbagonian and Jamaican dishes were served buffet styling. This harmonious integration of two cultures through food bridged the gap between the islands on either extremes of the Caribbean archipelago. The Jamaican especially (in particular Jason Fisher) loved the fried bake- a Trinbagonian breakfast dish and could not wait for seconds. The ackee and salt fish, Jamaica's national dish was wonderfully made and non-Jamaicans enjoyed it thoroughly, in particular those who had bad experiences with the dish before or who have never tasted it. The atmosphere was jovial and relaxed with conversation in full swing with the interjections of, "aye this food real tasting good!"
Trinbagonian, making it possible for any national to serve on the executive. A Jamaican (Christina) served this position for the academic year 2006-2007 and has done an excellent job thus far.
The Brunch in essence was a success. Great food, music and company were the catalyst for ensuring GSTT's achievement in hosting its first Annual Brunch. We look forward to another successful Brunch for the upcoming academic year to continue the tradition.
Special thanks goes out to the members of staff and the Post Graduates who attended, the chefs and organizers who created the beautiful ambience.
Hope to see you there next year for another Brunch!
