Each
year a number of International Relations majors are
selected based on their academic performance in the
first two years of study to participate in our Internship
Programme. Students
receive three credits on completion of the programme
and gain practical, in-house experience, which
serves to complement and enhance the traditional
academic courses. The internship may be undertaken
in any four week period during late May - August.
The
course is based on a four-week internship at an organization
closely affiliated with at least one area of International
Relations. The areas include:
- Trade
- Diplomacy
- Law
- Communications
- Security
- Networking
Students
are expected to prepare a report to be submitted
to the Department for 80% of the final grade. Reports
are due the first Friday in February 2003.
Report
Guidelines:
- Introduction
- First impressions
- First exercise
- Overview of Organization including; purpose,
resource base, structure
- Assessment of Organization – whether
it is fulfilling its mandate and how effectively
- Personal responsibilities
- Link between theory and practice
- Evaluation of internship
- Anything else – students may use their
creativity and their initiative based on the
type of organization placed in.
Note
the report does not have to be limited to the above
guidelines as students are allowed to use their initiative.
The
remaining 20% of the final grade will be based
on the results of an Evaluation form that the participating
organization will submit at the end of the internship
to the Department of Government.
