1. Overview

The Summer School Programme for the Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS) will be held during the period May 30 - July 15, 2005. Credits for courses passed will be granted to Registered Students of the University. Students who register in the summer school programme are subject to all faculty and university regulations. Students are reminded that the Summer School programme is OPTIONAL. Students outside the Faculty of Social Sciences are required to consult their respective faculties before registering for a course in the Faculty of Social Sciences.

 

2. Who Can Register

The following categories of students are eligible for admission to the Summer School:

  1. Registered students of the University who have to repeat any of the courses offered.
  2. Registered students of the University who have not taken the course(s) previously but fall into one of the following categories:
    • Students of the University who have not yet completed the requirements for the degree, diploma or certificate programme for which they are registered.
    • Registered UWI students from other UWI campuses.
  3. Students of the University who have been granted (a) leave of absence for Semester I and/or 2 preceding the Summer School, or (b) deferral of entry. Such students should register at the start of the Summer School, for Summer School only. Students on Leave of absence for an entire year are not eligible for admission to Summer School courses.
  4. Other persons, not students of the University, who are eligible to matriculate at either the normal or lower level. (These students must register in the Summer School programme and also with the Admissions Section of the University as Specially Admitted Students).

June 1 - 10               ALL students are required to review their registration and report any
                                   discrepancies to Students' Records Unit and the Summer Coordinator.

June 6 - 10               Late REGISTRATION (Late Registration fee of J$1,500 is applied)

June 10                   Registrations/ Adjustments beyond this date to be submitted to Academic Board;
                                  applications should be made through the Faculty office. There is NO guarantee
                                   that late requests will be granted.


June 10                   All payments must be completed by this date. Failure to do so will result in Course                                   De-registration. There will be no reinstatement of de-registered courses.

June 15                   De-registration

June 20-24             Mid-Semester Exams

JULY 1 - 4               Student Evaluations (tentative date)

JULY 13 - 15           ALL CLASSES END

 

4. Academic Integrity

Students have the responsibility to know and observe the Regulations of the Faculty and the University of the West Indies. Additionally, the regulations prohibit plagiarism, falsification of information and academic dishonesty. All regulations are in force during the Summer School programme.

 

5. Attendance

A MINIMUM ATTENDANCE OF 75% of Lectures/Tutorials is required. The teaching materials and course outlines will be the same as those used during Semester 1 or Semester 2 of academic year 2004/2005.

 

6. Course Selection and Registration

  • Faculty Bulletin/ Information Guide, timetable and Registration materials will be available online.
  • Course Selection will be carried out via the Internet at the Web site http://srs.uwimona.edu.jm:1104/student.htm. Students are required to select courses on-line before making payments.
  • Tuition Payment can be made at the Bursary Cashier, BillExpress, Paymaster or via UWI On-Line Fee Payment Service at https://www.mona.uwi.edu/finserv/tuition/. Students can pay by cash, Manager's Cheque, Credit or Debit Card. Students who make payment using eCommerce do so with a credit card. Payments made through any of the above require no Voucher collection from the Customer Services Section.
    • Payments can also be made at the National Commercial Bank (NCB).    A voucher for payment must be collected from the Customer Services Section before proceeding to the bank.
  • Students should return a copy of the payment made to the Customer Services Section if payment was made to the National Commercial Bank (NCB).
  • Non-UWI or "Special Admission" students are required to download a copy of the Special Admissions Application Forms from: http://www.mona.uwi.edu/admissions/forms/.
  • Students from the Faculties of Arts & Education and Pure & Applied Sciences who wish to pursue courses in the Faculty of Social Sciences should seek permission from their faculty before paying for these courses.
  • Only those students who have been notified in writing that they are allowed to do Exams Only can register in this category.
  • Students should note that courses on the timetable appear in one of three slots, labeled Slot A, Slot B, Slot C respectively. Students who are pursuing two courses, should choose carefully and register for only one course in any one slot. Refunds will not be granted for any "clashed course" save where there has been a timetable change resulting in the clash.

 

 

7. Examinations, Course Load

Students can register for a maximum of TWO courses within the FSS (including Exams Only1). Students are advised to check the timetable before registering. Examination procedures will be the same as those that apply for the end of semester examinations. Some courses may have a course work component. Finalizing students can apply to do a third course through the Faculty Coordinator. A student is deemed as finalizing if that student has only 3 or 4 courses left to complete the degree programme. Students may apply to the Faculty Coordinator or the Deputy Dean.

 

8. Registration Changes/Adjustments

  • Students who wish to adjust their registration are allowed to do so on-line up to June 3, 2005. Changes to registration between June 6 - 10 are allowed through Summer School Departmental Coordinators. These changes will be accommodated where the exam results have been posted in this period and students wish to repeat a failed course from the list published.
  • Changes to registration after June 10, 2005 can only be made through Academic Board, (please consult respective Faculty Office). These adjustments/ changes will only be allowed in exceptional circumstances.
 

9. Withdrawal

Students may withdraw from a course by notifying the Campus Registrar in writing, and copying the respective departmental coordinator. The student should clearly state the reason for the withdrawal and complete the required application form for refund if this is applicable. Students who wish to withdraw from a course after June 10, 2005, must apply to Academic Board, through their respective Faculty Office. Adjustment to registration will only be allowed in exceptional circumstances beyond June 10, 2005.

 

10. Refund Policy

A Request for refunds should be submitted on the appropriate forms to the Customer Services Section no later than June 10, 2005. A refund penalty is charged as follows: No penalty before May 30, 2005, 25% of fees up to June 3, 2005 and 30% of fees up to June 10, 2005. Requests submitted after June 10, 2005 will NOT be processed and NO Refund will be granted. Students who withdraw from a course after June 10, 2005 will not be refunded any portion of fees.

 

11. Payment of Fees

  • Fee payments can be made at NCB (UWI) branch or at the Bursary Cashier on vouchers provided by the Customer Services Section. Part payment of fees is NOT allowed. Cash, Manager's cheques, Debit and Credit cards will be accepted as payment for Summer School courses. There is a $1000.00 penalty for cheques which are 'returned to drawer'. Debit/ credit cards payments are allowed at the Registry Cashier.
  • Payments can also be made at BillExpress, Paymaster or online via UWI eCommerce at https://www.mona.uwi.edu/finserv/tuition/. These payments do not require the use of a voucher.
 

12. Fee Schedule

$13,509.00 UWI Mona, St. Augustine, Cave Hill undergraduate student fee at 4,506 per credit.
$6,000.00 Exams only fee at 2,252 PER CREDIT. (This fee category is only for students given this advisory from Board of Examiners.)
$1,500.00 Late fee. This fee will apply to registrations June 6-10, 2005
$22,494.00 Alumni/ Post-Graduate Tuition Fee at $7,498 per credit. Students in this category register as Specially Admitted students
$65,295.00 International Student / Special Admission Fee at 21,765.00 PER CREDIT.
$450.00 Special Admission Application fee.
In addition, all Specially Admitted students are required to pay the following Miscellaneous fees AFTER their application has been approved: Identification Card (First Issue) - $175; Special Admission Tuition fee; Guild Fee - $1,446; Health Fee - $2,490; Sports fee - $400.
