Student Services Manager

Mr. Peter O'Sullivan

Fifty one years ago on the 5th of October 1952, 101 students took up residence for the first time in “Hall 3.” This Hall was subsequently renamed Taylor Hall in honor of sir Thomas Taylor, the first principal of the university College of the West Indies. In the ensuing fifty years Taylor Hall has become without question the Hall of Halls of every creed or race. The students that have been privileged to have been apart the great tradition have invariable gone on to make significant contributions in their respective countries. The success of the university in fulfilling its motto “Oriens ex Occidente Lux” hinges on the positive impact you will make first as students and later as graduates. I would therefore urge you to make full use of the opportunity which you have been given.

It is essential that you quickly establish what it is that you want to achieve from your stay here and that you set your priorities in order to achieve your goals. In setting these goals, however, do not focus solely on your academic pursuit but get involved in the wide range of co-curricular activities which the campus has to offer. Pay attention not only to your studies but also to your physical, social and spiritual development.

Every effort has been made to provide the infrastructure and facilities in Hall which you require for your convenience and comfort, albeit at great cost. With this in mind it is necessary that you make a commitment to care and preserve hall fixtures, furnishings and all hall property. If problems arise feel free to speak to the block Reps, Hall Chairman, Resident Advisors or myself.

Welcome to Taylor Hall both residents and non residents. Please participate fully in the orientation programme which has been designed to facilitate your integration into the university and to expose you to the richness and diversity of university life.
