Angela Gordon Stair developed a full-time counselling
service on the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies to
provide opportunities for personal growth and development for students,
staff and dependents of staff through individual counselling and psychotherapy,
psychoeducational groups and workshops. She is responsible for the
day to day administration of the Counselling Unit in the University
Health Centre.
She holds a PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of
the West Indies, a Masters in Counselling from Western Carolina
University, North Carolina, USA and a Bachelor of Science [BSc (Hons)]
degree in Sociology. She also holds a Certificate of Advanced Graduate
Study (CAGS) in Counselling Psychology from Northeastern University,
Boston, Massachusetts, USA.
Dr Gordon Stair has attended numerous conferences and courses in
her field as well as in the area of administration in higher education.
In 1998 she co-presented a paper on “When Disaster Strikes
at Home and You Are Far Away – Helping International Students
Survive Crises at Home” at the American College Personnel
Association Conference, St Louis, Missouri, USA. In 1997 she also
presented a paper at the American College Personnel Association
Conference in Chicago, USA entitled “Bridging the Town-Gown
Gap: A Potpourri of Ideas”. Dr. Gordon Stair also presented
a paper entitled "Psychological Support Programmes:The Case
of the Jamaica Red Cross" at the Sixth International Congress
on Disasters held in Cuba in 2003.
