The SHP Newsletter - Issue
No. 42 May 2005
Editorial
The past few months have been quite busy for the Social History
Project. One of the lead activities of the project has been
the successful touring exhibit, “The Jamaican Black
Middle Class in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries.”
In February the exhibit was well-received at the Civic Centre
in Montego Bay. This was the third major site of the exhibit
which has generated much attention. Photos of the Montego
Bay launch can be found on p. 10 and Kathleen Monteith gives
on update on the exciting developments with that project and
other matters in the Director’s Report.
Our feature article comes from Fiztroy Williams whose fascinating
piece on Milk River in Jamaica is further illustration of
the natural wonders the Caribbean holds as well as the boundless
potential for future scholarly research. Dalea Bean, a graduate
student in the Department of History and Archaeology and Assistant
editor to the Newsletter, gives an account of a recent research
trip to London. We also highlight the recent publication of
Neither Led Nor Driven by two of our former directors, Brian
Moore and Michele Johnson.
Finally, the call for papers for the SHP’s 6th annual
symposium is out and we are looking forward to strong support
from SHP members. We hope you enjoy this issue of the Newsletter
and look forward to your contributions to upcoming issues.
