| Brief History The
Department of History is one of the oldest departments of the University
of the West, Mona, opening its doors with the arrival of Professor
John Parry in 1949.
In 1986 Mr. Edward Moulton-Barrett made a benefaction to the University
which permitted the establishment of a lectureship in Archaeology
attached to the Department of History. The Archaeology section has
now become an integral part of the Department at Mona as it was
renamed in February 2003 to be called Department of History and
Archaeology.
The principle objective of the Department is to provide a thorough
understanding of the development of the Caribbean. The teaching
programmes of the Departments vary to some extent to meet local
needs but are closely coordinated in examining and administration.
The department presently offers programmes leading to M.A., M.Phil.
and PhD degrees. Since 1993/94 the Department has offered a M.A.
(Heritage Studies) programme for person interested in public/applied
history.
