Course Description
Course Outline
A study of the creation of one of the most significant regional systems in world history, a system unified by the Atlantic ocean. The course will focus on how distinct and separate cultural and biological areas that surrounded the Atlantic were integrated into a network of exchange rooted in the long- distance movement of people, plants, animals, commodities and ideas. Demographic, economic and cultural consequences are emphasized.
Evaluation
Course Work Guidelines

The course will be examined in the following manner:

  1. In December 2005 there will be a final examination in which each student will be required to answer TWO questions in 2 hours. This examination will count for 60% of the mark for the course.
  2. In addition there will be coursework which will count for 40%. This coursework will consist of TWO ESSAYS, each worth 20%. The essays will be written in class time on the following dates:
    • Thursday, October 20, 2005
    • Thursday, November 17, 2005
  3. To qualify for the full coursework credit, each student must do both pieces of coursework. A student will only be exempted from this provision if a medical certificate, validated by the University Health Centre, is presented.
