A comparative examination of the disintegration of the ancien regime - the slave systems and supporting mercantile structures - and new modes of social and economic survival within the context of the rise of modernizing nationalist states. The central concept is the degree of continuity and change within the process of transformation at all levels. International relations and the maturing of regional identity are also discussed.
