The State and Development in Africa since 1900

The course examines the notion of nationalism in order to provide the framework for discussing the following themes: African resistance to colo- nial political domination and economic exploitation before and after the Second World War; decolonization and independence; post-colonial Afri- can states and the contemporary problems of nation-building and eco- nomic development; the effective- ness of supra-national organizations - for example, the Organisation of African Unity and the Economic Commis- sion for Africa - as agencies for achieving eco nomic and political develop- ment in Africa
