Description |

The Spanish Caribbean
is here defined as Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic
as well as Venezuela and Colombia in the circum Caribbean. The
economic, social, political and cultural history of these nations
will be assessed in comparative terms, and in particular relation
to the impact of global and international forces on their internal
evolution. These include the ideological impact of the United
States, the USSR (including the Cold War) and of the new era
of “globalization.” The following themes will be
discussed:
1. The Dominican Republic and Haiti, 1797-1844
2. The Cuban Wars of Independence, 1868-1898
3. The Sugar Industries of Cuba, the Dominican Republic and
Puerto Rico
4. The Coffee Industries of Puerto Rico., Costa Rica, Venezuela,
Colombia and Guatemala (including labour systems and West Indian
migration)
5. The United States “informal empire” in the Caribbean
area.
6. The dictatorships of Rafael Trujillo (Dominican Republic),
Juan Vicente Gómez (Venezuela), Gustavo Rojas Pinilla
(Colombia)
7. The growth of Labour Unions and other democratization tendencies
8. Nationalistic responses to U.S. Domination in Puerto Rico
and Cuba
9. The Cold War, including the Castro Revolution and the 1965
US military intervention in the Dominican Republic
10. The Violencia, the National Front and narco-trafficking
in Colombia
11. Petroleum shocks and Neo-Liberalism’s impact on the
Caribbean. |
| Assignments
and Evaluation: |

a) An in-class examination (20 percent)
b) A take-home essay of not more than 2,500 words (20 percent),
which must be presented in class.
c) A two-hour examination (60 percent)
Students will be penalized for handing in essays late. Essays
should preferably be typed but if not they should be legibly
written. Poor English attracts severe penalties.
Each member of the class must give at least one presentation
in class.
