The historical and ideological origins of apartheid and the implementation of the apartheid system after 1948. The background to the development of the apartheid regime from the 1950s, through the elaboration of the home lands policy in the 1960s to the reform era under Botha and De Klerk. Special emphasis will be placed on changing black strategies to resist apartheid.
