The scale, brutality and sheer industrial efficiency of the Jewish
Holocaust were without precedent in history and it is this 'uniqueness'
which renders it such a delicate and controversial topic for historical
study. This course ex- amines the centrality of racism to the ideology
of Hitler's National Socialist regime, tracing the evolution of
anti-semitic policies from 1933, the genesis of the "Final
Solution' and its execution from 1941, the responses of the European
population to it, and the historiographical debates which it has
provoked.
