Entry Requirements:   Admission to this programme is normally via the MPhil. Students registered for the MPhil. may in certain circumstances have their registration upgraded to the Ph.D. Such students must demonstrate an ability to cope with research at the higher level and a capacity to complete their work in good time, as well as having an appropriate topic. Transfers have been very rare in recent years and most students are encouraged to complete the MPhil. before moving ahead.
     
Programme:  

Presentation of a thesis of suitable standard and length on an approved subject not less than two calendar years after direct admission to the Ph.D. programme.

The Ph.D. thesis must be a new and substantial contribution to knowledge, and must be worthy of publication, that shows clear evidence of original research.

The Ph.D. candidate must also take an oral examination following submission of the thesis. This examination will cover their general field of study and the subject of the thesis.

Seminars:   In the Ph.D. programme, students must make annual presentations to the Departmental Seminars, reporting on their research. Seminar papers must be circulated at least seven working days before the scheduled seminar. Graduate students are also required to attend a minimum of 50 percent of scheduled Departmental Seminars each year.
     
Duration:   Full time students can complete Ph.D. programme in three calendar years.
     
Examination:   A candidate for the degree, having submitted the thesis and taken the oral examination, may be recommended to the Board for Graduate Studies and Senate for award of the degree or may be required to re-submit the thesis within a specified time period and/or repeat the oral examination or may have failed outright.
