Structure of the Institute
The Institute of Caribbean Studies is currently headed by Professor Carolyn Cooper who acts as Director. She is supported by an Administrative Assistant and part-time student employees. The Board of the ICS, which is responsible for determining the policy of the Institute, is based on our inclusive nature which results in all members of the Faculty of Humanities being de facto members. There are plans however, for an executive to be formed that will direct the policy of the Institute.
The current board of the ICS meets at least once per year, the last being in September, 2004. The institutional structure of the ICS was changed, as of November 2005, from a Special Project to a Department funded through the University Grants Committee.
Fellowships have been funded in Social History, Comparative Caribbean Literature, Caribbean Linguistics Survey, The History of Reggae, and in Folklore Studies. We also facilitate, where possible, visiting scholars researching topics of relevance to our objectives.
Teaching is currently undertaken by full-time, temporary part-time lecturers who conduct the courses at the undergraduate level. Thereare presently two full time Lectureships in the Institute. One is being filled by the lecturer and coordinator for the foundation course FD11A - Caribbean Civilisation and the other is filled by the lecturer of Cultural Studies. |
