Pre-departure and Arrival
When making your travel arrangements you are advised to travel on a return and NOT a one-way ticket to arrive at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, Jamaica. You are to provide all your flight arrival information beforehand, so that arrangements can be made for you to be picked up at the airport, as normal working hours and pick up times are between the hours of 8:30 – 4:30pm local time.
Should your flight arrive after these hours, special arrangements will have to be made beforehand for you to be picked up.
What to bring with you
If you are placed on a Hall of Residence, you will be provided with basic furnishings in each room, that is, a bed, desk, chair, chest of drawers and a clothes closet. There is a communal living/lounge area and a fully equipped kitchen. You will need bed linen (single bed), curtains, towels, toiletries, kitchen utensils including cutlery and a small pot. These items can also be purchased in Jamaica.
If you are on prescribed medication, you may bring adequate supplies of the drug or travel with your original prescription. Prescriptions may be filled at the Campus Health Centre.
Jamaica is a tropical island, fanned by the sea breezes; however the location of the Campus is on the Liguanea Plain where the temperature varies. Clothing should be lightweight and suitable for a climate that is fairly humid in the summer months. Annual temperatures in Kingston range between 22 and 32 degrees Celsius. Most lecture rooms are air-conditioned and students normally attend classes casually clad. You should travel with at least one semi-formal outfit.
There are fast food outlets on Campus where you can purchase meals should you so desire. On the other hand, should you choose to prepare your own food, basic necessities may be purchased at the commissaries or at the supermarket in the Students’ Union. There are also other supermarkets that are within close proximity to the Campus.
Note: everything you will need is available in Jamaica, but most imported items will cost more than you are accustomed to paying at home.
