Hospitality and Tourism
Tourism is the largest foreign exchange earner for
most of the countries in the Caribbean. With this in mind, the
UWI has repackaged programmes and repositioned its resources to
create a Tourism focal point within the School for Graduate Studies
and Research.
The tourism pillar in the School for Graduate Studies
and Research will facilitate research activities identified by
stakeholders as priority areas for investigation. These include:
-
Creating Efficiencies in Caribbean Hotel Operations
-
Human Resource Management of Caribbean People
-
Effective Tourism Management at the Policy Level
-
Global Competition
To further serve its stakeholders’ needs and
utilising experience gained from its research, the School for
Graduate Studies and Research (tourism) will offer consulting
services to assist in solving the many problems facing Caribbean
tourism.
As a catalyst for change the tourism pillar will
attempt to contribute to reshaping Caribbean tourism by:
-
Creating comprehensive university-wide tourism
programmes, which, through teaching, research and strategic
partnerships with the public and private sector, will
develop human resources at a graduate level specifically
trained to manage, improve and critically examine the
Caribbean tourism product.
-
Working with the Centre for Hotel and Tourism
Management and the Faculties of Social Sciences to create
two distinct fields of study by focusing on hospitality
and tourism separately.
-
Working with the Tertiary Level Institutions
Unit to continue to encourage the development of accessible
and flexible tourism programmes and courses for all sub-sectors
of this industry.
In keeping with policy decisions of the UWI to develop
strong ties with Latin America, Mexico and members of UNICA (Universities
and Research Institutions of the Caribbean), the School for Graduate
Studies and Research will seek to deepen links with universities
within the wider Caribbean for the purposes of:
- Extending research and teaching in the area of tourism and
cultural studies, sociology and anthropology;
- Developing capacity for language training and extending to
Latin America the influence and work of the UWI in the field of
tourism research.
