Degree of LLM
1. The following regulations shall apply to the degree of
Master of Laws (LL.M.), subject to Part I of the General
Regulations for Graduate Studies and Research fo the University
of the West Indies.
Qualifications For Admission
2. The following are eligible to apply for registration
for the LL.M. degree:
(i) graduates of this University holding the LL.B. degree
(ii) graduates of this University or of an approved University
holding a
degree which includes such law subjects as shall satisfy
the Board for
Graduate Studies and Research;
(iii) graduates of this University or of an approved University
who, having obtained a professional legal qualification,
are admitted to practice in any part of the Commonwealth;
(iv) persons who having obtained a professional legal qualification,
are admitted to practise in any part f the Commonwealth,
and who have
also been certified as being in practice for a minimum of
five years;
(v) graduates of this University or of any approved University
who satisfy the Board for Graduate Studies and Research
of their capability to
undertake the course of study leading to the award of the
LL.M. degree.
3. An applicant may be admitted as a full-time or part-time
candidate provided that an applicant pursuing the degree
by examination by course-work and dissertation may subject
to 26 and 27 below only be admitted as a full-time student
for the coursework part of the degree.
Qualifying Examination
4. (i) The following candidates shall be exempt from a qualification
examination;
(a) graduates of this University holding first or second
class honours LL.B. degree;
(b) graduates of this University or of an approved University
holding first or second class honours in an approved degree
116 with such law subjects as shall satisfy the Board for
Graduate
Studies and Research;
(c) candidates registered for the LL.M. (Legislative Drafting);
(ii) The Board for Graduate Studies and Research may grant
exemption
from the qualifying examination to graduates with professional
legal
qualification on the recommendation of the Faculty Sub-Committee
of
the Board for Graduate Studies and Research.
5. The qualifying examination shall consist of at least
two papers lasting three
hours each which shall be of an equivalent standard to that
of Part II or Part III
of the LL.B. degree examination.
6. The qualifying examination shall be set and marked by
examiners appointed by the Board for Graduate Studies and
Research on the recommendation of the subcommittee in conformity
with the general regulations of the Board Graduate Studies
and Research.
7. There shall be a Moderator appointed by the Board for
Graduate Studies and Research on the recommendation of the
sub-committee in conformity with general regulations of
the Board Graduate Studies and Research. 8. The Moderator
shall examine the question papers before the examination
and the scripts after they have been marked and may require
an oral examination.
9. A candidate shall pass the qualifying examination if
the examiners certify to the
Board for Higher Degrees that the candidate has reached
a standard equivalent to
a second class honours degree in the papers examined and
the moderator gives
his approval of the examination.
