LA10A Law and Legal Systems
  1. General
This course will be taught in the first Semester of Year I of the LL.B. degree
programme. It is a compulsory core course.

2. Course Objective
The fundamental objective of this course is to provide students with a
knowledge of the historical institutional and legal context of the operation of law
in the Commonwealth Caribbean. The issues dealt with in the course cover not
only institutions within the legal system, but also significant legal functionaries
within it.

3. Course Content

The topics covered in this course are as follows:

1. General Introduction on the Nature and Function of Law
2. Sources of Law
3. Types of Law
4. Origins and Evolution of Law in the West Indies
5. Administration of Justice in the West Indies
4. Method of Teaching

This course will be taught by way of three contact hours per student per week.
Each lecture will be of one hour duration.

5. Method of Assessment
Assessment will be by one essay assignment during the semester which shall
count for 25% of the marks, and one two hour examination at the end of each
semester. Students will be required to answer three questions selected from a
total of six questions in each examination.
