LA11A Criminal Law I
  1. General
This course will be taught in Semester I of Year I of the LL.B. programme.

2. Course Objective
This course is intended to expose students to both the general principles that
underlie the Criminal Law as well as to some specific crimes recognised by the
Criminal Law. The course aims at providing the student with a sufficient
breadth and depth of substantive Criminal Law as to allow a thorough
appreciation of Criminal Law issues.

3. Course Content
This course will cover the following topics:
i. Introduction to Functions of the Criminal Law

ii. Functions of the Criminal Law
iii. Elements of a Crime - actus reus and mens rea
iv. Crimes of Strict Liability
v. Crimes of Negligence
vi. Parties
vii. Defences
viii. Inchoate Crimes

4. Method of Teaching
This course will be taught by way of two lectures and one tutorial per week.
Each lecture will be of one hour duration and the tutorial will also be of one
duration.

5. Method of Assessment
This course will be assessed by way of a two-hour final examination at the end
of the Semester. Students will be required to answer three questions selected
from a total of six questions.
