Death Announcement
It is with much sadness that the University Community has learnt of the passing of Mr Samuel Bertram Bandara, Senior Librarian II, on September 25, 2006. He joined the staff of the University Library in September 1977. Mr B, as he was affectionately called, began his career in the education system of his native Sri Lanka where he worked as Assistant
Master of Trinity College from 1967 to 1968. He then migrated to Britain in 1968 and worked as an assistant with teaching and research duties at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Later, Mr B returned to Sri Lanka to work as an Assistant Librarian and Head of the Periodicals, Gifts and Exchanges Division at the University of Sri Lanka. He remained there until October 1974. In November 1974 he answered the call to become Head Master of Primary
School, Trinity College, in Kandy, and there he stayed until July 1977.

In September of that year Jamaica beckoned, and this adventurous gentleman made the University of the West Indies his next work station. He started out as Head, Gifts and Exchanges Section of the Library and remained in that position until 1983 when the Section was merged with the Orders Section and became the Acquisitions Section which he headed
until 2000. He was transferred to the Administrative Offices to act in the capacity of Deputy Librarian from October 2000 to January 2002, and remained in Administration, largely responsible for human resource matters up to the time of the award of Sabbatical and Study Leave in 2005. Mr B's life has been a very productive one. At one time or another he has been Visiting Lecturer, General Secretary of a Teachers Association, Editor, Archeological Field Director, Programme
Coordinator, Author, and 'Counsellor'. His pleasant personality made him very approachable and many persons sought him out for assistance in a variety of matters. He never refused to advise and help, and thus impacted many lives positively. He had an encyclopaedic mind and loved to share his knowledge with others. The University in general and his co-workers at the Library in particular, mourn his passing, and extend condolences to his wife, Swarna, Head of the Medical Branch Library, and to their children, relatives and friends.A Service of Thanksgiving for the Life Mr Bandara will take place on Friday, October 6 at the University Chapel beginning at 2:00pm.

THE CARIBBEAN DISASTER VIRTUAL LIBRARY

The Caribbean Disaster Virtual Library was officially launched on Friday, January 27, 2006 by Professor Ronald Young, Dean, Faculty, Pure and Applied Sciences. The Caribbean Virtual Disaster Library is a collaborative effort between The Caribbean Disaster Information Network (CARDIN, University of the West Indies Library; the Unit for Disaster Studies, Department of Geography and Geology; the Regional Disaster Information Centre for Latin America and the Caribbean (CRID), with sponsorship from the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR), CUSO and the European Community Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO).

The development of the Virtual Library resulted from a need for readily available documents on Caribbean disaster information. The Unit for Disaster Studies and CRID provided the base documents for the virtual library.

The virtual library represents a one-of-a-kind information resource which allows students, policy makers, professionals and the general public to retrieve the most pertinent disaster related information specific to the Caribbean. Details of the Virtual Library can be accessed at: http://mona.uwi.edu/cardin/virtual_library/searchlibrary.asp

Launch of the Mona Online Research Database

The first phase of the Mona Online Research Database was officially launched by Professor Kenneth Hall, Principal, UWI, Mona Campus, on Thursday, January 26, 2006 in the Multifunctional Room of the Main Library. This project grew out of a recognition by the Principal of the need to access, from a single source, information relative to the research activities on the Campus. He therefore challenged the Library to develop such a resource. It is against this backdrop that the Library is now developing the Mona Online Research Database, in collaboration with Mona Information Technology Services (MITS) and the Human Resources Management Division (HRMD). The database will provide access to a variety of research related information including staff interests, staff publications, expert information, post graduate advising, funding, research projects and statistics. This launch coincides with the publication of a printed volume, Research for Development: A Bibliography of Staff Publications Vol. 3, 2002-2005.
