Hurricane Ivan Damage to Library

The Mona community would have been aware that due to damage from Hurricane Ivan, library service in the Main Library had to be restricted for the first two weeks beginning September 20 when the University reopened. Although there was some damage to the Science library from flooding in the basement and to the Medical Library from leaks, this was not severe enough to affect regular service.

The damage at the Main Library was caused from extensive leaking in the extension which was erected in 1996 and from flooding of the entire ground floor as a result of drains which became blocked from hurricane debris. The flooding affected the lower shelves of the ground floor stack and these books had to be removed, frozen or air dried and treated to prevent the growth of mold. The recovery process is continuing while increased access to open shelf collections and other services are being phased in beginning Monday October 4. Some study areas will be inaccessible for a while yet, but every effort is being made to restore full access as soon as possible.

October 1, 2004

Unavailablity of some Library Material

The Library regrets that as a result of damage caused by the recent hurricane, some items in the Main Library are unavailable for use until further notice. Areas affected are classes D, E, F, and P of the open collections as well as some items from all classes in the West Indies and Special Collections.

Unfortunately the status of these items will be seen as “available” in the online catalogue (OPAC) as the records have not yet been amended. We have however marked the shelves where items are unavailable.

Every effort is being made to rehabilitate and replace the damaged books as early as possible.

October 1, 2004

Increased access

In keeping with our promise to improve access to library services in the Main Library as early as possible, the following services will be available with effect from Monday, October 4, 2004:

1. Resumption of Access to:

Open Shelf Collections
Periodicals Floor
Government Serials

2. Reopening of RESU (Reprographic Services Unit)

The West Indies and Special Collections (WI & SC) will re-open on Wednesday, October 6, 2004.

Access to the Mezzanine Floor and Second Floor Reading Room will not be permitted at this time as books are still being dried on these floors. Library staff will however fetch materials required from this area.

Any inconvenience caused is regretted.

September 18, 2004

Library re-opening

The following services will be available in the Main library- : Access to RBC materials, use of MERIC and the RBC Reading Room, access to male and female toilet facilities on the ground floor. The Overnight reading room will continue to operate as usual.

Full library service will be available in the Medical and Science Libraries.

Regular semester opening hours (8.30am – 10.pm) will apply in all Libraries

We regret the inconvenience and wish to assure you that every effort is being made to restore full service on a phased basis as soon as possible.
